Introduction

In 2008 staff from Ideal for All were invited to attend a European conference Health – most valued commodity? in Brussels by Sandwell’s Director of Public Health Dr John Middleton. The conference was organised by Caritas, a confederation of 165 Catholic relief, development and social service organisations operating in over 200 countries and territories worldwide. Caritas has offices at the United Nations in New York and in Geneva, as well as headquarters in Vatican City.

Dr Middleton’s keynote speech to the assembled delegates of European health and social care experts informed them about the NHS in England and the work Ideal for All and our fellow third sector organisations in Sandwell are doing to ensure disabled people are included in all aspects of determining how and when their social care is delivered.

Our team used this opportunity to network with our European counterparts and tell them about our innovative approach through our pioneering user-led management and governance structure. This model was both new and exciting to the assembled delegates. After the conference we were invited to participate in a Grundtvig Lifelong Learning partnership.

Partnership projects are about co-operation and exchanging information at a European level, enabling us to work with partners from across Europe to share practice, discuss problems and compare solutions on a particular topic.
